WHEB Asset Management | Putting the Backbone into a Renewable Energy Future

Published on September 21, 2023

The International Renewable Energy Agency believes that renewable energy and electrification can deliver 75% of the energy-related CO2 emissions reductions needed to keep global temperature increases “well below” 2°C.

The question is: can the infrastructure cope?

Wind and solar energy sources are both variable and decentralized. In contrast, the existing electricity network was designed around very stable and centralized power generation sources. As a result, innovation and investment are needed to modernize the grid to support a growing share of renewables.

Alongside this challenge, end-use electrification (of transport and heating for example) also increases the demand burden, meaning grid expansion will be necessary alongside modernization. On the positive side, increased deployment of digitalization and “smart technology” can enable more flexible demand.

WHEB's Victoria MacLean explains why they believe that these challenges are underestimated, but how they also see under-appreciated opportunities in this area.
